Thieves hit bottle shop Thursday, 26 January 2012 00:00
Damage done: Publican Darren Cole awoke to find thieves taking alcohol from his bottle shop. The culprits entered by smashing a front window that is now boarded up.
THIEVES struck the Wheatsheaf Hotel on Sunday night, smashing a window at the pub’s bottle shop and making off with a large quantity of alcohol.
The culprits struck at around 11.30pm, when they used rocks to break one of the premises’ front windows. They entered through the broken glass and proceeded to collect alcohol from the store.
The shop’s security alarm woke owner Darren Cole, who saw a strange sight when he looked out the window onto High Street.
“I saw someone walking across the street with a box of alcohol, and I thought ‘That’s a pretty big coincidence.’”
Mr Cole said he went down stairs to investigate and found two men in the shop front. They then exited the shop via the window they had broken in through and ran south across High Street.
The publican then flagged down a passing vehicle to help locate the men.
Mr Cole said the thieves had emptied a bin in the bottle shop that they then filled with alcohol.
He said they made off with a significant amount of alcohol. He estimated the damaged shop front would cost $500 to $1000 to repair.
Terang Police’s Senior Constable Leigh Hallinan said police were seeking witnesses who
might have seen the culprits in town on Sunday night, around midnight.
He said there were certainly people around Terang at the time, with many coming back from Warrnambool after the weekend’s speedway competition.
Anyone with information on the identity of those involved in the incident can contact Terang Police on 5592 1058 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
