WESTERN Waves claimed victory in the final of the Victorian Country Cricket League’s under 21 competition at Warrion on Sunday.
Waves captain Ben Grinter won the toss and decided to bat against the Barwon opposition.
In very warm conditions, openers Cam Williams and Josh Stapleton got off to a flier.
The first wicket fell with the score at 61 during the eighth over.
Williams was second to fall, not before smashing 43 off 22 deliveries, which included six boundaries and one six.
Grinter snicked one and the score was 3/67 in the tenth over.
Simon Close and Will Chapples stopped the rot and settle into a match-winning 87 run partnership.
Another impressive 50 in this competition to Close but he was out at that score, and the Waves were 4/154.
Chapples and Nick Butters added another 22 before Will returned to the pavilion with 33 runs.
Butters and Matt Bignell made 23 runs before Matt gifted a return catch to the bowler – 6/199.
Only 20 more runs were added for the last four wickets and, the Waves losing 7/64 to finish at 219, still with four overs to spare.
This gifted Barwon 54 over to chase down the score.
Barwon scored 13 runs from the first two overs, however the next four overs produced a flurry of wickets.
Left-armers Tom Bowman took three wickets and Daniel Jones snared two scalps.
During the ninth over, Bowman knocked the stumps all about again for his fourth wicket, and Barwon were 6/30.
A partnership of 39 between Howarth and Spence steadied the ship before Will Chapples and Joe Higgins took the last four wickets between them.
Barwon were dismissed for 92, a wonderful 127 run win to the Waves.
Tom Bowman (4/20 off seven overs), Daniel Jones (2/31, seven overs), Will Chapples (1/14, seven overs) and Joe Higgins (3/24 off 6.1 overs) formed an attack that proved too formidable for the highly fancied Barwon side.
