During a night of celebrations in Warrnambool last weekend, the team at South West Sport were proud to announce this year’s award winners, celebrating the people, clubs and organisations that bring community sport to life in the south west.

Among the awards, Pomborneit Cricket Club took out the Women and Girls Participation Initiative of the Year award.

The award acknowledges a club or organisation that is creating participation opportunities for women and girls, driving gender equity in sport.

With a strong focus on being a pillar for social connection in their community, a targeted club-wide initiative from the Pomborneit Cricket Club has seen growth in all areas of women and girls’ participation over the past 12 months.

It has also culminated in a senior women’s premiership in 2024.

Initiated from the adoption of an equitable approach towards their club’s social media, where both men and women are represented fairly, the club has seen an increase in recognition and engagement of female players and volunteers.

The club’s senior female players have also held school clinics to attract new participants and coached young players in its Woolworths Blast program.

The inclusion of women in these roles has helped new participants and participants’ mums see themselves reflected in the club – beyond the traditional sideline roles, creating a club the whole family can participate in.
