MORTLAKE police will increase patrols over the coming months after resident safety was raised as a point of emphasis through community feedback.

Victoria Police set time aside last week for members of the Mortlake police station to sit down with residents for ‘Coffee with a Cop’.
The session, hosted at Mac’s Hotel, is part of a policing initiative designed to encourage direct communication between police and members of the community they serve.
Mortlake Police Sergeant Nathan Hunt said general resident safety had been a major point of discussions, in response to which police have vowed to increase their presence within the town.
“We had a lot of people tell us about their safety concerns and what we could do to help them with that,” he said.
“The community really outlined the need for police presence in and around Mortlake.
“As a result, we took that on-board and we’re going to increase patrols over the next few months to make sure we’re really visible.
“We’ll be pulling cars over on the main street, conducting foot patrols in the local business district and showcasing that we’re out and supporting the safety of our community.”
Sgt Hunt said he found the ‘Coffee with a Cop’ session to be an informative and positive experience.
“It was a really good outcome,” he said.
“We had a lot of people attend over the course of the day so we were able to enhance communication to build confidence with local community members.
“It gives them the opportunity to get to know us in their neighbourhood and ask any policing questions they may have, rather having to come to the police station to ask questions.
“It gives us a better understanding of the local community and the issues. It’s a great initiative to build trust and positive rapport with the community we serve.
“We’re going to continue doing that in the future, with more ‘Coffee with a Cop’ sessions to come.”
Sgt Hunt said police would also continue to welcome the opportunity to hear from any residents at any time.
“We take on all concerns and look at how we can make the area feel safer,” he said.
“We’re thankful for the public who attended but our door is always open for anyone who would like to provide feedback so we can focus on the areas we need to focus on.”
