Bulls take top scalp
POMBORNEIT scored a crucial win over top placed Cobden in an exciting round six match in the Colac-South West premier competition.
The visitors batted first and got away to a flying start via opener Kaplan McCann, who made 49 before being the first wicket to fall, dismissed by Josh Reynolds.
The visitors put together some solid partnerships but never completely got away, making 7/222 from their 50 overs.
“It was a funny sort of day,” Pomborneit skipper Grant Place said.
“We gave them some chances and they batted well but despite that we managed to keep the run rate in check.”
Paceman Roshen Fernando led the Bulls bowling with 4/35 from 10 overs, while Tharaka Sendanayake was at his miserly best with 1/24 from 10.
Several of the Pomborneit batsmen made starts in the run chase, but the main partnership didn’t come until Tom Darcy joined Sendanayake, the pair putting on 55 for the 6th wicket.
Sendanayake made 50 from 40 balls, with five fours and a six, while Darcy batted until the end, finishing unbeaten on 31 from 34 balls.
The Bulls passed Cobden’s score in the final over, eight wickets down with three balls remaining to record their third win of the season.
“Senda was fantastic, when he gets going he can hit the ball wherever he wants.
“Tom Darcy played a really mature innings, he never looked fazed and controlled the finish well.”
This week Pomborneit play City United at the Elliminyt Recreation Reserve.
In division two, Pomborneit had a 44 run loss to Heytesbury-Princetown at Timboon.
Batting first, the home team were dismissed for 129 in the 40th over.
Junior player George Sadler took his maiden five wicket haul at senior level, finishing with 6/31 from eight overs with his off-breaks, while Levi Cootesmith took 3/21 from 4.1 overs.
The Bulls looked on target at 2/56 before collapsing to be all out for 85.
Captain Charlie Voutier top scored with 23 in the loss.
This week the division two Bulls host Bookaar at Pomborneit.
In division three, Pomborneit Gold got the points after Woorndoo forfeited their scheduled match, while Pomborneit Maroon had a 39 run win over Camperdown at the Camperdown number two oval.
Batting first, Maroon made 9/167 from their 40 overs.
Opener Craig Boyd hit four sixes on his way to 42 from 40 balls.
Darren Fox made 24, with captain Donnie McInnes, in his 200th game for Pomborneit, making an unbeaten 31 from 29 balls.
In reply, Maroon reduced Camperdown to 7/39, the home team eventually finishing on 8/128.
McInnes took 4/21 from eight overs, Bailey Fox took 2/20 from eight with opening bowlers Hugo Saarikallio and Marc Van Es taking a wicket each.
This week’s division three games see Gold play Ecklin at Terang number two, while Maroon host Boorcan at South Purrumbete.
The Pomborneit Gold women scored a 54 run win in the round five match at Pomborneit on Sunday.
Batting first, Gold made 7/129 from their 25 overs.
Skipper Samantha Coxon top scored with 30 from 29 balls, hitting five boundaries.
Nellie Sadler made 28 from 34 balls, with Jess Moulden making 19 and Neave Thompson finishing on 18 not out.
“It was definitely tough going, Simpson has improved a lot,” Coxon said.
“They bowled really well and didn’t make it easy for us to score.”
Coxon and Moulden struck early in Simpson’s run chase, the Gold captain thrilled with the fielding effort of her team.
Coxon, Moulden Jada Mahony, Lucia Clarke and Lily Van Es all took a wicket each in the win.
Pomborneit Maroon had a 61 run loss to Tomahawk Creek at Irrewillipe.
Maroon batted first and were all out in the 24th over for 24.
Co-captain Janelle Whitehead batted through the innings, making 29 not out from 68 balls as the only player to make double figures.
Three wickets each to Lilli Saarikallio and Isla Spokes saw Maroon in with a sniff with Tomahawk Creek at 6/60, but the home team managed to bat out their oversfinishing on 7/135.
Saarikallio finished with 3/10 from five overs, while Spokes took 3/35 from five.
This week’s women’s games see Gold play Colac at CMTP Oval, while Maroon host Irrewarra at South Purrumbete.
