A BUMPER day of racing is anticipated when the gates open on the Sungold Milk Terang Cup this Sunday.

And they’re off: Terang and District Racing Club president Shane Scally believes the Sungold Milk Terang Cup will draw a strong field to town this Sunday.

Terang Racecourse is expected to be abuzz with excitement as some of the top stables battle it out with big dollars on the line.

Terang and District Racing Club president Shane Scally said the final acceptors would not be confirmed until Thursday (today), but believed the Terang Cup was certain to be as big as ever.

“It’s a race that has been around for well over 100 years, and there’s been a lot of work done at the race course over the past 12-months to improve facilities and fencing,” he said.

“The track is already in good condition despite heavy rain recently and we’re not anticipating much rain for the remainder of the week, so it should be a very good track rating.

“The field hasn’t been confirmed yet but the Terang Cup has historically drawn a strong field of entries because the meeting is the lead up to the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival (Tuesday, April 30).

“The meeting is well supported by leading stables and we’re expecting that to continue again, so we’d love to see everyone come out and have a great day.”

The eight-race event boasts some the most coveted hardware on the Terang and District Racing Club calendar, including high-stakes racing such as the BM64 Neville Wilson Series Heat 1400m, the Westmeath 1200m BM78 handicap with $40,000 in total prize money and the $70,000 prize pool drawing in the best of the best for the 2150m Terang Cup.

The meeting will mark the first for the club since the complete installation of new barriers to heighten safety and the appeal of country racing in Terang.

“Everything has come up spot-on for cup day,” Mr Scally said.

“The track looks magnificent and the new railings are the final bit of the fencing project we’ve invested in.

“The new white fencing stands out very well as a great safety measure, it matches everything else we’ve done which basically amounts to a refencing of the race course over the past three years, and it’ll come up great on the television.”

With sunny conditions forecast for Terang this Sunday, Mr Scally said he’s expecting a strong crowd to flock through the gates.

“I hope to see people enjoy the day as this has traditionally been such a big day,” he said.

“There are still marquees and umbrella packages available.

“We’re looking forward to good racing and a good crowd.”

Gates open at 11am.

A courtesy bus will be running from the Middle Hotel every 30 minutes between 12.30pm and 2pm on the day, and then following the last race.
