Great Ocean Road upgrades commencing

THE Victorian Government is ramping up vital upgrades to the Great Ocean Road’s inland routes to ensure smoother and safer journeys for all drivers.

As part of the government’s Great Ocean Road and Inland Routes Program, rehabilitation and safety works are set to begin in the coming weeks.

These works will focus on improving road conditions and enhancing safety on some of the iconic tourism route’s key connecting roads.

Once complete, local communities, business operators and visitors will enjoy safer, smoother and more-reliable travel.

The works will include safety upgrades at the intersections of Princetown Road and Melrose Road in Princetown, as well as upgrades to roads in Birregurra, Irrewillipe and Barongarook.

Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) and construction partner Downer will deliver these rehabilitation and safety works on behalf of the Department of Transport and Planning.

Reduced speeds and temporary lane closures will be in place to ensure safety for both workers and drivers.

Traffic controllers will be on-site to guide traffic, and access to businesses and residences will be maintained throughout the works.

“We appreciate the ongoing patience of local residents, businesses and visitors as we complete these important works to improve safety and road conditions across the region,” Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said.

These upgrades will follow the completion of rehabilitation and safety works at 18 sites between 2024 and mid-2025 as part of the Great Ocean Road and Inland Routes Program.

Minor finishing works will continue at these sites over the coming months.

The Allan Labor Government’s $255 million investment in the program is helping improve the resilience of the Great Ocean Road and key connecting roads so it can continue carrying millions of people each year as Victoria’s number-one tourist route.
