The riders taking part in the Great Vic Bike Ride arrived in Mortlake on Sunday, camping out at the recreation reserve before departing on Monday morning.

The event spans over five days with riding, camping and connection uniting the thousands of participants.

Bicycle Network chief executive officer Alison McCormack said the team behind the event had been overwhelmed with the showing of support from the Mortlake community.

“It was great to start in Mortlake this year because we changed up the format as a five-day event, but it worked so well in Mortlake,” she said.

“We did a pre-camp where all the riders had the option to camp at the recreation reserve.

“They came and found their way through the town which was amazing because the town put on such a beautiful face.

“The pub had music and buffets, and someone also dressed up the town with big bikes which was just such a surprise.

“We don’t know who made them but it was just so awesome to see when you’re starting an event, coming into a town full of anticipation – we just appreciate the community so much because Mortlake was just really special.”

Ms McCormack said the event had proven a success this year.

“We went from Mortlake to Koroit on Monday, which was a beautiful day with the wind on the rider’s back,” she said.

“It’s what everyone wants and the rain has held off so far.

“We’re having a wonderful time and everyone just loves the region and the communities.

“Everyone has been so wonderful.”
