Hatchery planned in Curdievale

A PLANNING permit has been lodged for the development of a dwelling and poultry hatching facility in Curdievale.

The site is 0.8 hectares in size, which has been used by the current owners as part of the family dairy farm for grazing.

Located on Curdievale-Port Campbell Road, the proposed dwelling is in a Farming Zone and is intended to be used for incubating, hatching and rearing chicks for grow out at the adjoining farm as meat chickens.

“The property hasn’t had a dedicated agricultural purpose for many years, and this proposal brings it back into agricultural production,” the application states.

“The proponents have relocated from New South Wales to Warrnambool while they develop their farm enterprise and dwelling.

“The move to this property will be two-fold – to develop their chicken-producing enterprise and to support their parents on their farm.

“The proponents will also inherit the parents’ 75.8-hectare property in time and provide potential for significant expansion of the agricultural activities.”

The planning application notes the plan is in line with similar sized lots in the area and the use is “consistent with the objectives for the use of agricultural landscapes for primary production”.

“The presented proposal demonstrates great use and returns from a small farming lot – it is well thought out and doesn’t require large areas of farmland to be successful,” the application states.

“Smaller farms like this one need to be more intensive in operation to achieve a viable income, and that creates a greater risk of critical agricultural issues that can be damaging to productivity, viability and financial return.

“The placement of the dwelling and the proposed poultry production is not seen to conflict with any other farming activities.

“The major activity of the area is grazing and dairy, which is generally low offence and outdoor poultry farms like this one are also similarly low offence.

“The site is suitably placed to cause no loss of land or interruption to any other farmer’s activity.”

A decision on the planning application will not be made prior to Thursday, November 27.

Any person who may be affected by the granting of the permit may object or make other submissions to the responsible authority.

An objection must be made to the responsible authority in writing, include the reasons for the objection and state how the objector would be affected.

The application and supporting documents can be viewed at the Corangamite Shire Council office at 181 Manifold Street, Camperdown, or online at www.corangamite.vic.gov.au.
