Homegrown contingent shines in Terang
THE Terang Harness Racing Club drew a strong field on Monday for an event which paid respects to some of the region’s biggest names in the sport.
The eight-race program was a Memorial Day for the club, with races named after prominent racing local figures.
“We had quite a few people who were involved with the families in harness racing, some from way back and some still involved,” Terang Harness Racing Club president Chris O’Connor said.
“That part of the day was well supported and a really nice thing for the club to be able to do.
“We want to recognise those who have been a big part of the club, especially those who volunteered many years ago to set up the club.
“The main race was the Basil J.W. Brock Memorial and the Brock family presented, in addition to receiving a rug.”
Mr O’Connor said the club had also held its second Seniors Day on the day, which has proven a success which looks to be shaping up as a long-term addition to the calendar.
“The facilities were pretty packed upstairs,” he said.
“It was great to be able to do that and ensure people can make the most of a day meeting.
“We want to get people out and about, which you see when the likes of Cooinda and some of the aged care places used the occasion as an outing.
“It’s good to be able to offer people a nice afternoon in a warm atmosphere, running into old friends.
“It was really good – it’s something we did last year, and I think it will only grow from here.”

The John Meade trained and driven Glory Connect took the Laurie Kenna Memorial Trot.
I Am The Storm (trained Emma Stewart, driven Ryan Sanderson) saluted the Mick O’Keeffe Memorial Vicbred Voucher Pace.
Race three saw the Michelle Phillips trained, Glen Craven driven Nonnas Dream claim the Denis Heffernan Memorial Pace.
The Kevin O’Bryan Memorial Maiden Pace was won by That’s Kevin, trained Dona Bourke and driven Jackie Barker.
Sister Molly (Trained Marg and Patty Lee, driven Jason Lee) took out the Harold Craven Memorial Trotters Handicap.
The Basil J.W. Brock Memorial Pace saw Vinny Rock emerge victorious, trained by Rod Carberry and driven Michael Bellman.
Quick Decision (trained Paul Castle, driven Reagan Clarke) lived up to the name with an impressive win in the Norm McSween Memorial Pace final.
In the final race for the day, Le Cardinal (trained Matthew Craven, driven Amy Day) surged to victory in the Leo and Maureen O’Connor Memorial Pace.
“There was a strong local contingent and some really nice horses who won,” Mr O’Connor said.
“It was a good day all around, well supported by local trainers who dominated the card.”
