Life-sized creation to mark Easter

THE St Paul’s Anglican Church in Camperdown has seen a minor makeover, with a special decoration installed to mark the Easter period.

The display depicts the tomb in which Jesus Christ is said to have been buried in following his crucifixion and includes a cross and a closable door.

Reverend Matthew Jones said the life-size model, which was created by churchgoer Ron Simcox, follows on from the life-sized stable created last year to mark Christmas.

“Last year, we had a cross we transformed with flowers and a garden,” he said.

“This time, we thought we’d try and do a tomb because we had the life-size depiction of when Jesus was born so it’d be good to have the life-size depiction of where he was buried.

“The tomb, we understand, was roughly hewn into rock or stone.

“For Good Friday we had the bare tomb with the door closed, dry woody plants and a bare cross.

“For Easter, to represent the resurrection, we opened the door and put all the life-giving colour and vegetation around it to show death doesn’t get the last say – life does.”

Among the details is a white cloth inside the tomb, representing the burial wrap left behind by Jesus when he resurrected.

Rev Jones said churchgoers enjoyed the visual representation of the tomb, including being able to see the transformation on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

“They came in on Easter morning and were amazed,” he said.

“When they came in on Good Friday, because it was a solemn day, they were in awe at the tomb.

“When they came in on Easter Sunday and it was transformed, there was a strong sense of amazement.

“It had a really positive effect on people and lifted their spirits.”

The display will remain up over the next few weeks.
