The round 17 match saw the Magpies score a 12.9.81 to 7.13.55 victory at Leura Oval.

The Bombers held a slender two point lead at half time, with the third quarter decisive in the result.

“Coming in we knew it was a real danger game,” Camperdown coach Clinton Thomas said.

“It was certainly nice to beat them this time, the local derby certainly does generate a lot of interest.”

Of the tight first half, Thomas said the Magpies were prepared for a fast start.

“Cobden really jumped us last time and got away from us.

“It was all about weathering the storm in the first half, we matched them well.”

Thomas was thrilled with how the Magpies played in the third quarter.

“We played our game in third, it was nice to have our processes stand up.”

“Beating Cobden is always a fantastic day for Camperdown.

“The boys had really good energy all day and certainly enjoyed the win.”

Josh Place was rated as best for the Magpies in the win.

“Josh had eight intercept marks at half back, he rebounded strongly and gave us plenty of drive.”

Matthew Field and Wilba Cheeseman were also in the Magpies best.

“Matty played a solid game on the wing, he was laying tackles and his defensive running was superb.”

“It was one of Wilba’s better games, we know he’s a good finisher but the metric for him is his defensive effort and pressure which he was really strong at on Saturday.”

Cheeseman, Bayley Thompson, Judah Dundon and Angus Gordon kicked two goals each for the Magpies.

With a game to go Camperdown sit two points outside the top five.

To make the finals Camperdown need to beat Koroit at Koroit tomorrow and rely on Terang Mortlake losing to Warrnambool.

“Koroit are probably the in-form team in the competition at the moment.

“We’ve got a few boys under some injury clouds, but it's a good opportunity to play our game and have a peg at it.”

Cobden got the points in the reserves football with a 10 point win, 6.7.43 to 5.3.33.

Isaac McVilly, Jake Clissold, Leigh Ball, Luke Ball, Jack Heanly and Paddy Conheady were Camperdown’s best.

Clissold and Tim Fitzgerald kicked two goals each.

The under 18 game saw Cobden have a strong win, 12.14.86 to 1.4.10.

Taj Cunningham, Isaac Cootesmith and Riley Murfitt were best for the Magpies, with Cunningham kicking the lone goal.

In the open netball, Cobden scored a 63-50 win.

The match served as a preview of the elimination final in two weeks time where the teams will meet again.

“The scores didn’t really reflect how we played” Camperdown coach Jill Leader said.

“We had our chances to close the gap, but overall I was pleased with the girls’ effort.”

Leader took plenty of positives out of the game.

“It was a game to build belief and we achieved that.

“It was good to see where we matched up well and what we need to work on ahead of the elimination final.”

Goal defence Rosie Pickles and wing defence Elsie Sinnott were best for Camperdown.

“Rosie and Elsie slowed down Cobden’s movement into the goal circle, they both give us great flexibility over the defensive end.

“Elsie played a fantastic game on a quality player with a lot of experience in Jaymie Finch.”

Leader was pleased with the full team performance.

“They all played well, there wasn’t a passenger.”

Goal shooter Nell Mitchell scored a match high 30 goals, with Piper Stephens scoring 20.

Leader expects a tough encounter against third placed Koroit to finish the home and away season.

“It doesn’t get any easier this week, they are a very strong team.

“We weren’t happy with our game against them last time, we’ll take that belief from last week’s game and play hard.”
