Mortlake’s new art initiative
A NEW public art initiative will see everyday spaces across Moyne transformed into outdoor exhibition sites, with works by local and regional artists set to feature in Mortlake and Koroit.
The initiative marks the first stage of the Public Art program, with potential for expansion to additional sites across the shire over time.
Moyne Shire Council has launched the program, with the first sites to be activated at the Koroit Theatre and Mortlake Community Hub.
Artworks will be reproduced at large scale and installed at these locations, creating highly visible public displays.
The program will deliver a rotating series of artworks, with four exhibitions at each site every year, creating a constantly changing visual experience for residents and visitors.
The initiative has been designed to showcase creative talent from across the shire and the south west while also bringing new energy and interest to town centres.
Moyne Shire Council mayor councillor Jordan Lockett said the program was an important step in delivering on council’s Arts and Culture Strategy.
“This initiative is about putting creativity into everyday spaces and making it visible to the community,” he said.
“It creates fantastic opportunities for local artists to showcase their work while also adding to the vibrancy of our towns and encouraging people to stop, explore and engage with our communities.
“Programs like this support local creative industries and contribute to the appeal of our region for both residents and visitors.”
Unlike traditional public art commissions, the program provides ongoing opportunities for artists to present their work in the public realm, with artists able to submit existing works or propose new pieces.
Expressions of Interest opened Monday, May 18 and close on Sunday, June 14.
The program is open to emerging and established artists based across the south west, working in a range of visual practices.
