MRC raises over $30,000 for breast cancer
MERCY Regional College (MRC) Year 12 students have hosted a successful fundraiser for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA), with 18 students and one staff member shaving their heads before an enthusiastic crowd recently.
More than $3800 was made on the day, meaning that over $30,000 has been raised for the cause when added to the online tally.
The day included the much-anticipated shaving and waxing, as well as activities and a chance for students to hear from two MRC staff members who have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, Jude Murfitt and Kym Penry.
Senior school community leader Berni Sinnott expressed her thanks to the Year 12 cohort.
“I’m very proud of the efforts of our Year 12 students. Everyone contributed in some way and their efforts have been met with overwhelming support from the community,” she said.
“It’s been a great chance for our students to be part of something bigger than themselves.
“With Jude and Kym recently being diagnosed with breast cancer, the response from the school community hits close to home.”
Year 12 student Myles Sinnott, who had his head shaved for the cause, thanked everyone involved.
“On behalf of the Year 12 cohort I would like to say a big thanks to Berni for the amount of work she put in to help us organise the shave for breast cancer day,” he said.
“Also a big thanks to all staff who helped or contributed in some way to the day. We really appreciate it.”
“It has been a highlight of our last year of school and is something we are proud to have been a part of.”
School captain for excellence Veronica Wyss thanked her peers and community for their support.
“Thank you to all the organisers, to Jude and to Kym and for everyone who made the day so fantastic,” she said.
The BCNA fundraising is ongoing.
