New facilities coming
A NEW arts and technology building is set to transform the learning environment at Mercy Regional College’s (MRC) McAuley campus in Camperdown.

An artist’s impression of the design was released recently, boasting contemporary design technology learning spaces, new student toilet facilities to replace the aged facilities currently in place, and an indoor multipurpose gathering space.
MRC principal Sharon Gillett said she knew how great facilities can enhance learning and wellbeing.
“This new build will provide wonderful new spaces for our learners, incorporating some much-needed improvements including lift access to middle school, a new textiles classroom, general classrooms and toilet facilities,” she said.
“An amphitheatre gathering space will be the centrepiece of the build, which will also connect our middle school, arts centre and senior school via two innovative sky bridges.
“All of these wonderful features will be a game-changer for access and flow across the campus.”
Planning approval has now been received and the new building will stand on the site of the existing basketball half court and 1979 double storey building, consisting of the toilet block and two upstairs spaces – which most recently served as a textiles and common room and were formerly a staff room.
MRC business manager Jude Murfitt is working hard to see the project come to fruition.
“The existing toilet block and upstairs spaces have been a mainstay for many years and have come to the end of their useful life,” she said.
“Demolition is hoped to start in July this year and with the tender phase coming up, we look forward to working with the chosen contractor to create a spectacular new space that can be enjoyed for years to come.
“In line with our intent to use energy more wisely, solar panels will be incorporated into the build.”
The federal government is partially funding the $8 million project.
“We are most grateful to the government for its $5 million support of this project,” Ms Murfitt said.
