Hacked away: A resident has expressed frustration after the tree in their yard was cut back to the point of dying.

The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said they couldn’t understand why their tree was cut back significantly as they could see a tree further up on Cressy Street had grown near the powerlines.

“They hacked the front of my tree and, because of the powerline that goes across my yard, they hack the back of my tree as well,” the resident said.

“That wire shouldn’t even really run over my property – it should be off the wires into their place.

“They hacked and killed my tree – that tree is probably around 180 years old.

“How come you’re hacking all these little trees on the natures strips that were nowhere near the powerlines?

“It’s just strange. Why all these trees when the one down the end hasn’t been touched?”

Speaking with Western District Newspapers, the resident also pointed out a number of trees along the nature strip which had been cut due to powerlines.

Western District Newspapers approached Powercor for comment, with a Powercor spokesperson saying the tree trimming services aimed to reduce the risk of power outages and fires caused by trees touching powerlines.

“We need to keep the power network safe and reliable for all customers so it’s critical we keep trees clear of powerlines and meet Victorian safety regulations,” the spokesperson said.

“We notify residents in advance if we need to cut trees on private properties growing too close to powerlines.

“While we understand the resident’s concerns, in this area trees must be at least 3.5 metres from powerlines to meet regulations.

“The local council is responsible for trimming trees on the nature strip in this area.”
