Strong start continues

THE Corangamite Lions division one men’s team has continued its strong start to its debut season in the Ballarat and District Soccer Association with a 2-0 win over Ballarat based club Victoria Park.

The scores were level at nil-all at the half time break at the Lions’ home pitch in Scotts Creek.

“We really did dominate the game in the first half and should have scored,” Lions defender Jordan Footman said.

The Lions scored two second half goals as a result of Victoria Park own goals, while not conceding any of their own.

“We got lucky with getting the two own goals, but at the same time we defended really well in the second half,” Footman said.

“As part of the defensive group a clean sheet is always nice.”

In the division two men’s game Victoria Park had a 4-0 win.

In the division one women’s game, Corangamite had a 3-1 win.

Footman, the Lions women’s coach, was thrilled with the performance of the team.

“We were very impressive, really starting to gain in confidence,” Footman said.

Footman said the women’s team had to adapted quickly after the move from the South West Victoria Soccer Association.

“The Ballarat competition is a stronger competition, it’s been a big change going from seven a side to 11 a side,” he said.

“We’ve had to really work on our structures and plays and it’s starting to come together.”

Lenise Mantell, Courtney Wells and Jess Maxwell were the goal scorers for the Lions.

“We gave Jess Maxwell license to have a crack at the goals if she had a chance and she delivered with a great goal,” Footman said.

“She was a standout player for us.”

The Lions under 12 team had a 7-1 loss to Buninyong, also at Scotts Creek.

Lincoln Rowe was the goal scorer for the junior Lions.
