Lucky run: A wheat truck avoided causing injuries when it rolled away from a service station and ended up in a billabong in Skipton last Thursday.

The incident, involving a Kenworth Prime mover and attached trailer, occurred at around 4.15pm on Thursday, November 13.

Corangamite Senior Sergeant Bill Caldow said the fully loaded wheat truck was parked at the Caltex Service Station on Montgomery Street

“The driver, a 40-year-old Ballarat man, left the truck and went inside service station store,” he said.

“The unattended truck started rolling, leaving the service station driveway and crossing Montgomery Street (Glenelg Highway) before crashing through a barrier and down embankment, across a footpath and into Stewart Park.

“The truck came to rest in a billabong off the Mt Emu Creek, after colliding with some trees in the park.

“The truck, particularly the cabin was extensively damaged.”

No persons were injured in the incident as the truck avoided colliding with other vehicles or people.

Skipton Police Leading Senior Constable Anthony Graham was first on scene, having partially witnessed the incident.

Snr Sgt Caldow said Country Fire Authority (CFA) also attended the scene.

“CFA attended and checked for safety regarding any potential fuel leak and confirmed no leak of fuel and tanks not compromised,” he said.

“There was a leak of some wheat into billabong.

“A very large salvage operation conducted Friday and Saturday truck and trailer removed by Saturday evening.

“Victoria Police are making enquiries into the matter.”

VicRoad contractors were on site to direct traffic through one lane while the salvage operation took place.
