Up for the challenge?

RESIDENTS are being encouraged to take up the challenge of summiting the district’s four mountain peaks next weekend for the annual Four Peaks event.

By wd-news

Organiser John Fallon said the event, now in its sixth year, will follow the format of Four Peaks challenges from previous years.

“Everyone gathers at the base of Mt Leura at 9.30am, and they all head off at their own pace and walk the two mountains in Camperdown,” he said.

“Depending on where people come from, they might do Mt Elephant next or Mt Noorat next.

“Everyone walks at their own pace, and everyone finishes the four peaks at their own pace.

“We usually have large numbers of people coming from all over the state – I’ve already had enquiries from Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne and Warrnambool from people wishing to attend.

“People don’t need to register before hand – they just need to sign up on the day.”

The event will be held on Sunday, April 13, and people of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to participate.

Those seeking to accept the challenge are encouraged to bring their own morning tea, lunch, snacks, drinks, sunscreen and vehicle to reach Mt Elephant and Mt Noorat.

Visitors to the area are also invited to bring along their binoculars and cameras to take in the view at the summits.

Mr Fallon extended his gratitude to the management committees of Mt Noorat, Mt Elephant and Mts Leura and Sugarloaf, as well as the Friends of Mt Leura for their cooperation in bringing the challenge each year.

“We’re hopeful the event encourages people to visit the area and realise there are attractions here that are worthwhile coming to and they might visit in the future,” he said.

“We’re also hoping to portray our volcanic reserves in the best possible light.”

Attendees are encouraged to wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear on the day.
