Wannon Awards presented today

MEMBER for Wannon Dan Tehan is set to host the 2025 Wannon Sport and Volunteer Awards, which will be held in Colac on Friday, November 21 (today).

In the morning, Mr Tehan will present the Sport Awards, celebrating athletes, coaches, officials and sporting clubs across Wannon for their outstanding contributions and achievements over the past year.

“The Wannon Sport Awards are an important opportunity for our community to come together and recognise the dedication, talent and passion that drive sport in our region,” he said.

“More than winning, participating in sport helps to build strong communities, boosts confidence and fosters a sense of belonging and connection.”

Joining Mr Tehan at the Sport Awards ceremony is guest speaker, Olympian Judy Pollock.

Recognised as one of Australia’s greatest middle-distance runners, Ms Pollock rose to prominence in the 1960s when she won bronze in the 400m at the Tokyo Olympics.

Despite injuries and time away to raise a family, Judy made outstanding comebacks to compete in three Olympic Games and set an Australian 1500m record at the age of 36.

In the afternoon, Mr Tehan will host the Volunteer Awards.

“Volunteers are the backbone of our rural communities,” he said.

“These awards acknowledge the selfless individuals and groups whose work – often behind the scenes – ensures our community organisations continue to thrive.”

Mr Tehan will be joined at the Volunteer Awards by guest speaker Susanna Ryan.

Ms Ryan is an inspiring young leader and dedicated surf lifesaver who was recently named Youth Lifesaver of the Year by Life Saving Victoria.

Currently serving as vice club captain, patrol captain, and youth program coordinator at the Port Campbell Surf Lifesaving Club, Ms Ryan has also been honoured as Corangamite Shire’s Young Volunteer of the Year, reflecting her exceptional commitment to keeping her community safe and supporting the next generation of lifesavers.

This year, 37 recipients will be acknowledged for the Sport Awards and 54 recipients for the Volunteer Awards.

“Every recipient recognised through these awards reflects the spirit that makes Wannon such a special place,” Mr Tehan said.

“Our communities thrive because of people like these who give, lead and inspire others through their actions.”
