Young Bulls rise to the occasion
A FOUR wicket haul from 17 year-old opening bowler Finn Tolland played a big part in Pomborneit restricting Woorndoo to 116 in Saturday’s division one match at MCP Oval.
Tolland claimed all of the visitors’ top four batsmen on his way to 4/21 from 10 overs.
Spinners Danussika Bandara (3/16 from 10 overs) and Matt Bignell (1/19 from 10) were particularly miserly with the ball as the Bulls bowled Woorndoo out in the 49th over.
Pomborneit passed the score in the 20th over for the loss of two wickets, Tharaka Sendanayake was unbeaten on 50 from 36 balls including six fours and two sixes, and skipper Matt Bignell was not out on 33.
The pairs’ third wicket partnership of 66 led the Bulls to an eight-wicket win, staying a game clear on top of the ladder.
The division two Bulls batted first on the first game on the new pitch at the Timboon High School Oval and with some strong contributions, made a club division two record score of 8/294.
Stand-in captain Luke Reynolds made 68 from 76 balls including 10 fours and Tim Whitehead finished the innings strongly with 57 from 46 balls including six fours and two sixes.
It was Tom Darcy's maiden century that set up the big score.
Darcy, still recovering from recent surgery that has him out of his regular spot in the division one team, blasted 112 from 55 balls, hitting 10 fours and eight sixes in a breathtaking display despite his discomfort.
Darcy's ton was not only his first century but also his first 50 at senior level.
In reply Heytesbury/Princetown took it up to the Pomborneit bowlers, posting 7/208 to still fall 86 runs short.
Charlie Voutier was the best of the Bulls bowlers with 3/24 from six overs, Donnie McInnes took 2/17 from five overs with the new ball, and senior debutante Isaac Cootesmith, a junior playing in the under 17 and under 16 teams, impressed with 0/17 from five overs.
The division three Bulls travelled to Woorndoo, the home team batting first and posting 2/155.
Tayla Reynolds, in her 100th senior game for the club (62nd senior men's competition game alongside 38 senior women's games) was the pick of the bowlers with 1/21 from eight overs.
Her brother Harley took the other wicket.
In reply the Bulls could only manage 6/121 from their 40 overs.
Mark McInnes made a career high 45, skipper Tony Evans made 23, while junior players Ollie Delaney (23) and Brady Bernoth (16 not out) also batted well.
The Pomborneit Gold women batted first in their match at Simpson, making 1/181 from their 20 overs.
Strong batting throughout, with Samantha Coxon (32 retired from 23 balls), Ella Sadler (30 retired from 30 balls), Rachel Dendle (33 retired from 29 balls), Nellie Sadler (29 from 32 balls) and Tayla Reynolds (22 not out from 20 balls) contributed well to a record Pomborneit senior women’s score.
In reply the home team were restricted to 5/67 from their 20 overs.
Tayla Reynolds with 2/3 from three overs had the pick of the bowling figures, with a wicket each to Samantha Coxon, Nellie Sadler and Ella Sadler.
The Pomborneit Maroon women batted first at MCP Oval against Apollo Bay and were made to work hard for their 6/70 from 20 overs.
Janelle Whitehead and Lily Van Es both with 10 were the top scorers as former Australian Test and ODI player Sharon Tredrea proved hard to score off with 1/1 from her four overs.
Apollo Bay passed the home team's score in the 14th over, the game called off with the Sharks on 5/78, Janelle Whitehead taking 2/18 from four overs with wickets to skipper Julie Baud, Lily Van Es and junior player Lilli Saarikalllio, who played alongside her mother Satu for the first time.
The Pomborneit under 17 boys have consolidated their spot in the top two with a 169 run win over City United at MCP Oval on Tuesday night.
Sent in to bat, the Bulls made 7/220 from their 30 overs.
Openers Noah Riches (56 from 30 balls) and Finn Tolland (41 from 30 balls) were particularly impressive, Ben Whytcross with 38 retired, Gavin Reynolds with 24 and George Sadler with 20 not out also played their part.
Opening bowlers Gavin Reynolds (3/5 from two overs) and Noah Riches (1/3 from two) tore through the City United top order, the visitors eventually dismissed for 51.
The other wicket takers were Bradey Fratantaro with three, Max Rees with two and Josh Reynolds one.
The under 17 girls had their second loss of the season with a 15 run defeat by Bookaar at Frederick St on Sunday.
The highlight was a brilliant spell of bowling from Nellie Sadler, who took 5/2 from four overs, all five of her wickets were bowled as the home team made 6/101 from their 20 overs.
The ultra-consistent Jada Mahony was the only Pomborneit batter to get going in the run chase, making 30 from 21 balls including six fours, Pomborneit all out for 86.
The under 16 boys batted first against Heytesbury/Princetown at MCP Oval on Sunday and made their highest score of the season with 3/227 from their 35 overs.
Ben Whytcross and Noah Riches both made 54 retired, Whytcross making his score off 53 balls including six fours and a six, and Riches making his runs from 28 balls with three fours and five sixes.
Gavin Reynolds with 39 and Patrick Spokes with 22 not out were the other main contributors.
The junior Bulls then restricted the visitors to 9/69 in a very even team bowling performance.
The under 14 boys played on the turf wicket at Colac’s Eastern reserve on Friday night, batting first and making 9/138.
Ollie West top scored with 29, Jonty Raven unbeaten on 24 and Josh Reynolds with 18 the top scorers.
The Bulls then bowled City United out for 60, Max Rees, Marc Van Es and Josh Reynolds taking two wickets each.
The under 13 boys returned Friday night with a Pomborneit Gold v Pomborneit Maroon match at MCP Oval on Friday night, the Maroon boys scoring a comfortable win.
Gold batted first and were dismissed for 50, with two wickets each to Miller Murphy, Jonty Richardson and Lewie West.
In reply Maroon made 2/99, Hugo Saarikallio (15 retired), Bailey Fox (15 retired) and Miller Murphy (12 retired) the best with the bat, while Alex Huggins took two wickets for Gold.
The Pomborneit Gold under 13 girls had a 46 run win over Colac at CMTP Oval on Sunday, Isla Spokes with 27 and Charlotte Richardson with 15 top scoring in Gold’s 3/120.
Elisha Boyd, Meg Nolan and Charlotte Richardson each took two wickets as the Gold girls restricted Colac to 7/74.
Pomborneit Maroon under 13 girls had the bye.
